Custom Coiled Spring Pin Options

There are a number of common special Coiled Spring Pins that SPIROL has designed over the years to meet specific performance requirements.  This includes making Coiled Pins from special materials such as 316 stainless steel, beryllium copper, and Inconel, or designing Coiled Pins to meet unique application requirements resulting in custom diameters, custom lengths, special features, etc.

SPIROL also manufactures Coiled Spring Pins and Slotted Spring Pins to meet military and government requirements.  All products purchased to military specifications are supplied with the required testing and certification documentation. Coiled Spring Pins

SPIROL manufactures and supplies a large selection of Coiled Spring Pins for military aircraft, navigational equipment, artillery, navy vessels, aerospace components, etc. All Coiled Pins purchased per the military specifications are supplied with the required testing and certification documentation. All MS, NASM, and NAS certified parts are DFARS compliant.

All pins per NAS and NASM (formerly MS) specifications are provided with a Certificate of Conformance. This certifies that the pins have been tested per the sample plans specified in specification ANSI A 1.4-1993 (previously MIL-STD-105) referenced in NASM 10971. The following information is provided with the Certificate of Conformance:

  • A certificate stating conformance that testing has been done and results are on file
  • Material certifications - actual composition results
  • Finish certifications
  • Hardness test results
  • Certification that SPIROL, as a supplier, has met the requirements of the specifications and contract. We use a signature and statement of compliance on our packing slips to conform to this requirement.

Series 500 Extra Light Duty Coiled Pins

The Series 500 Extra Light Duty Coiled Pins were specifically designed for use in soft or fragile materials. The 1½ coil formation ensures that the radial force exerted against the hole wall does not exceed the strength of the hole material to prevent deformation. These pins are also an economical solution where pin strength is not a major design consideration. Typical applications for Series 500 Extra Light Duty Pins include: hinge pins in plastic or ceramic assemblies, alignment pins, and fastening applications where the hole is close to an edge of an assembly component.

Within the family of the Series 500 Extra Light Duty Coiled Pin, is the Series 550 Cosmetic Coiled Pins designed specifically for use in Cosmetic Cases.

Series 600 Superflex Coiled Pins

SPIROL's Series 600 Superflex Coiled Pin has a loosely wrapped outer coil and a diameter at 90º to the seam equal to the hole size to provide a low insertion force and enhanced flexibility after insertion. The Superflex Pin eliminates insertion problems associated with hardened holes with sharp edges.  A Superflex Coiled Pin is not distorted during insertion and maintains its straightness. One example of a great application for the Superflex Pin is when the pin is inserted into a shaft with both ends exposed for engagement into a slotted clutch component.

316 Stainless Steel Coiled Spring Pins

SPIROL manufactures Coiled Spring Pins out of 316 stainless steel to meet specific application requirements.  Type 316 stainless steel is similar to 302/304 stainless steel with a slightly higher nickel content and the addition of molybdenum. The molybdenum content increases the chemical resistance of this alloy greatly. 316 exhibits superior pitting resistance against sea water,  acetic acid vapors, chlorides, sodium and calcium brines, hypochlorite solutions, phosphoric acid, and the sulfite liquors and sulfurous acids used in the paper and pulp industry. This alloy is also austenitic, non-magnetic and non-hardenable using conventional methods. 316 stainless steel has better mechanical properties at elevated temperatures than 302/304 and offers excellent mechanical integrity at subzero temperatures. Typical applications for SPIROL's 316 Stainless Steel Coiled Pins include the following: marine, processing equipment, industrial, oil and gas and medical.

Coiled Spring Pins have a greater shear strength than most Solid Pins because Coiled Spring Pins are heat treated and the majority of Solid Pins available on the market are not. Coiled Spring Pins can be installed with a hammer, press, air hammer, or automatic pin inserter. The pin size and volume of products being assembled will dictate the best assembly method. Proper fixturing is critical to ensure a successful installation, and it’s also recommended that manufacturers use a spring-loaded alignment pin for assemblies with through-holes. Coiled Spring Pins were designed to be serviceable fasteners. In assemblies with through holes, they can be removed with a punch with the same nominal diameter as the pin. The punch must have a flat, square end. In assemblies with blind holes, Coiled Pins can be removed with pliers or an electrical discharge machine. No. Both types of Spring Pins (Coiled Spring Pins and Slotted Spring Pins) have chamfers that are smaller than the hole, and they compress during the installation process to conform to the hole diameter. We only recommend edge breaks on holes where Coiled Pins and Slotted Pins are installed.
Coiled Spring Pins can (and often are) used in plastics. In fact, Light Duty Coiled Spring Pins were specifically designed for use in plastics! Light Duty Coiled Pins exert low forces on plastic holes, extending the functional lifetime of the product. Additionally, the seam is tucked and does not make contact with the hole. That’s why Coiled Spring Pins are the fastener of choice for plastic products with hinges such as plastic door handles, plastic latches and cosmetic cases.
