中国Standard Duty Coiled Spring Pins
The Coiled Spring Pin was invented by SPIROL in 1948. SPIROL offers Coiled Pins in three duties, light, standard and heavy, to provide a variety of combinations of strength, flexibility and diameters to accommodate different host materials and applications. Standard duty (sometimes called "medium" duty) Coiled Spring Pins are generally recommended for use in nonferrous and mild steel assemblies and provide the optimum combination of strength and flexibility in these materials. Standard duty Coiled Pins are also preferred in hardened components when there is enough space to accommodate the larger diameter to withstand the applied force because of their ability to absorb shock and vibration.

Metric Sizes - Standard Duty
SPIROL's standard duty metric Coiled Spring Pins conform to ISO 8750 and ASME B18.8.3M. Ranging in diameter from 0.8mm up to 20mm, SPIROL's standard duty Coiled Pins are offered in high carbon steel, 6150 alloy steel, 302/304 nickel (austenitic) stainless steel and 420 chrome (martensitic) stainless steel.
Inch Sizes - Standard Duty
SPIROL offers inch (imperial) standard duty Coiled Spring Pins in diameters ranging from .031" (1/32) up to .750" (3/4). SPIROL's standard materials include high carbon steel, 302/304 austenitic (nickel) stainless steel, and 420 martensitic (chrome) stainless steel; as well as 6150 alloy steel for diameters .625" (5/8) and larger. Standard duty inch Coiled Pins conform to ASME B18.8.2.

Application Success Stories
Fastens Aluminum Shaft to Rotor in Variable Speed Marine Pump
Customer Challenge:
A pump designer experienced shearing of a pin that attached an aluminum shaft to a powdered metal rotor in a heavy duty marine pump. They wanted to use one pin in both a heavy duty and smaller sized pump, but were unsuccessful in their attempts.
SPIROL solution:
- SPIROL Application Engineers determined that the current design of the shaft and rotor placed the pin in bending which severely weakened the system.
- SPIROL recommended to reduce the clearance between the shear plane to a maximum of 0.13mm (.005"), move the shear plane to be at least one pin diameter away from end of pin, and eliminate the countersinks on the shaft hole.
- Since the pin is installed into a soft aluminum shaft, SPIROL recommended the customer use a standard duty Coiled Spring Pin (rather than a heavy duty). The increased flexibility of the standard duty protects the hole by absorbing the forces rather than transmitting them onto the aluminum host.
- By incorporating SPIROL’s suggestions, the customer could use the same pin in both applications, reduce machining costs, and reduce the cost of the pin. These cost savings were accomplished with an increase in performance of both pumps
Retaining Pins in a Forklift Assembly
Customer Challenge:
A leading manufacturer of forklifts contacted SPIROL to help resolve an issue they were experiencing with interlocked Slotted Spring Pins used to retain two cast iron and steel components together. In addition to production inefficiencies, the installation process also caused injuries on the assembly floor.
SPIROL solution:
- SPIROL Engineering recommended replacing the current Slotted Pins with standard duty Coiled Spring Pins. Since they do not have a slot, Coiled Pins eliminated the issues with interlocking, and they significantly reduced the insertion force.
- SPIROL also recommended the use of a Pin-Driving Chuck and a pneumatic hammer rather than using a conventional hammer to alleviate the repetitive strain issues.
- Coiled Pins enabled the manufacturer to widen their hole tolerances which reduced the manufacturing processing time & cost.
- By partnering with SPIROL, the forklift manufacturer benefited from using a superior fastener, a faster and safer assembly process, and the cost savings in the manufacturing process, medical fees and lost time.
Alignment Pin in Automotive Oil Pump Assembly
Customer Challenge:
A manufacturer of automotive oil pump assemblies who traditionally used Solid Dowels for alignment requested SPIROL’s engineering support to reduce cost, total assembly weight and installation forces.
SPIROL solution:
- SPIROL Engineering recommended the use of standard duty Coiled Spring Pins to replace the Solid Dowels in the new oil pump application.
- The standard duty Coiled Pin's flexible diameter enables the pin to to compress during installation. As a result, the insertion force is much lower than rigid Solid Pins.
- The flexible diameter of the Coiled Spring Pin also enables the pin to absorb much wider hole tolerances than the rigid (inflexible) Solid Dowels. This reduces the manufacturing cost to prepare the hole since the hole only needs to be drilled versus drilled and precision reamed.
- Given that the Coiled Pin is comprised of 2 1/4 coils thinly wrapped steel and has a hollow center, they are significantly lighter than Solid Dowel pins.
- The replacement of the Solid Dowel Pins with the Standard Duty Coiled Pin enabled the oil pump manufacturer to reduce assembly weight, lower installation forces, and reduce the total cost of assembly.
Hinge Pin in Circular Saw
Customer Challenge:
A manufacturer of hand and power tools requested SPIROL's assistance to alleviate high insertion forces they were experiencing with the current hinge pin in their circular saw blade.
SPIROL solution:
- SPIROL's Application Engineering team discovered that the air cylinder on their automatic installation equipment was undersized and could not generate enough force to fully install the current pin into the hole.
- Based on the fact that the hinge pin had low shear requirements, SPIROL Engineering recommended that the hand and power tool manufacturer change to a light duty Coiled Spring Pin which would reduce the insertion force by approximately 50% and require zero changes to the assembly.
- SPIROL Engineering also recommended that the manufacturer replace a tapered disappearing pin that was used to align the holes to a straight pin to ensure the holes were aligned throughout the entire assembly process.
- Finally, SPIROL recommended that the customer replace the worn insertion quill that presses the pin into the hole. Worn insertion quills will push on the inner coils of the Coiled Spring Pin during installation and result in higher insertion forces.
