Valve Assembly
A valve train systems manufacturer was using a hollow, machined rod in the assembly of a valve assembly. This component makes the link between the plunger and the spool. These are the components that allow the assembly to complete a cycle. Due to the fact that the rod is the link between the plunger and spool, it is a very critical component. One of the requirements of this product (used as the link) is that oil needed to pass through the ID of the part.
The machined component had a solid wall with a hole drilled in its center. Due to the fact that it was stainless steel, the run time to produce a single component was extensive. Even though the machined component met the performance requirements of the application, the customer wanted to reduce the cost of this expensive rod.
Due to the critical characteristics of the application, a standard roll-formed pin could not be used. SPIROL Engineering worked with the customer to design a special roll-formed component that could be used in place of a machined component at a fraction of the cost. The original component was roughly $0.125 per piece. The pin that SPIROL proposed was priced at $0.05 per piece. All testing concluded that our pin performed the same as their original machined pin. With the customer incorporating this design into their assembly, they were presented with a $105,000 annual savings.
SPIROL's Application Engineers have over 60 years of experience in design, production techniques, and installation methods of components used in the joining and assembly processes. Starting with your objective, our Application Engineers will determine the best component for the assembly that meets your specific requirements at the lowest total cost. Consideration is given to component design, assembly costs, and manufacturing objectives.
Usually, one of our 30,000 standard parts - available in both inch and metric sizes - will meet the application requirements. However, when necessary, we will customize a standard component, or even create a new one to fit the exact requirements of your application. A comprehensive technical proposal will be provided to you that will detail our Engineering recommendation. SPIROL may also provide documented performance test reports and installation criteria upon request.
Complimentary Applications Engineering Support: SPIROL Engineers will review your application needs and work with your design team to recommend the best solution.
